Summer Reading Club

June is here and school will be out soon and that means vacations and lazy, hazy days with the kids (actually my son's preschool has already let out for the year, but the public schools here have another two weeks to go). My idea of a great vacation would be sitting under an umbrella on a beach somewhere with a good book in my hand... and maybe a cool drink with its own umbrella in my other hand. ;-)

However, it's not always so easy to keep kids interested in reading. Many teachers and parents I talk to say it's important for kids to keep reading during the long summer break, and that that's especially true for young children. Here's one way that might help keep your kids' nose in a book: check out the Montgomery County Public Library's Summer Reading Club. Actually, all libraries in the state of Maryland are participating (and I am sure other jurisdictions have their own versions as well). They have reading lists for babies and toddlers all the way through the 6th grade and offer prizes to kids who reach their reading goals. Cool!

As a bit of a side note, our library's website has a poll of kids' favorite mystery book series. The Boxcar Children series seems to be far and away the most popular, with over 88% of the votes at the moment. That's kind of cool. They were favorites of mine when I was a kid too.
