The Need for Speed

Shhh! Hey, hear that? That's the sound of 6Mbps of data coursing through 20 feet of Cat5 on it's way to my laptop. Yes, the Daily Yak has finally moved into the 21st century!

Well, almost.

I just finished installing my broadband connection and - yippee - it's fast! Just about anything would be an improvement over my old dial-up connection, of course.

It was tough when I left my job, and its T1 line, to stay home with the kids. My 56k modem seemed agonizingly slow, but after nearly 5 years that T1's speed had become just a faded memory. The fog of my limited bandwidth would lift occasionally (when I visited my in-laws, who had cable, for instance) but for the most part it was just what was and I got used to it.

So, what made us make the leap to broadband after all this time? So that it would be easier for my wife to work from home when necessary basically, and it's actually cheaper now than our old dial-up ISP. Well, at least until our "introductory" rate expires. And she'll be able to work while I read blogs. Sweet!

Now, if I could just get the Wi-Fi network set up....
