A Few More Thoughts on Election 2004 (Part I)
A few more thoughts on the 2004 Presidential Election... before we return to our regularly scheduled programming:
1) I'd like to congratulate President Bush and the Republican Party, as well as their volunteers and supporters, on their victory this past Tuesday. Karl Rove proved himself a master of political strategy once again (I'm assuming that he was the primary architect of W '04 even if he wasn't the actual campaign manager) as they obviously ran a very effective campaign.
Wednesday night I was on a conference call with Governor Howard Dean. He felt that the election results were not necessarily "about what we did wrong, but what they did very well." I agree with that assessment to a certain extent, though not completely. I think the Kerry campaign made some mistakes, but in the end elections come down to who is better at getting out the vote. More people voted against Bush than any other incumbent President in history, so it could certainly be argued that the Democrats did a fair job at that most basic level. Unfortunately (or not, depending on your point-of-view) the GOP did even better. So, hats off to the victors!
